Module 3 - Techniques & Troubleshooting brings everything together from Modules 1 and 2, helping you confidently choose the right combination of stabilisers, fabrics, threads, needles, hooping and designs for each project. You’ll learn essential machine embroidery terminology using my easy-to-follow embroidery dictionary, then stitch out six popular techniques including appliqué, reverse appliqué, embroidery on fleece, knockdown stitches, freestanding lace and in-the-hoop designs. We’ll also tackle common embroidery problems so you know what went wrong — and how to fix it — before finishing with the basics of machine maintenance to keep your embroidery machine running smoothly.

Section 01

Getting To Know Your Machine

Duration 15 mins

First up, we learn all about your machine and what it's capable of. Time to dust of your machines manual!! We'll use this along with the included print out and some guidance from me to find out all of the information needed to make your embroidery journey as smooth as possible.

Section 03

Stabilisers

Duration 26 mins

One of the most confusing machine embroidery topics and the one I get asked about most often - stabilisers! In this section we dive into the world of stabilisers and look at many different types and why there are so many!! Won't just one stabiliser do? In a word - no! I explain why and my method of selecting the best one for the job.

Needles & Thread

Next we take on needles and thread, looking at when to change your needle, why it's important to do so and why different types of needle and thread matter. We also look at a variety of different thread types and why the cheapest thread may not be the best choice!

Section 04

Hooping Techniques

Duration 31 mins

So many people I meet really struggle with hooping. In this section we cover how to use your hoops correctly, how to hoop up properly and we look at some alternative hooping methods too. We even cover what those plastic grid things are that came with your hoops and how they can be so useful!!

Section 01

Embroidery File Formats

In this first section, we learn about embroidery file formats, what they are, why there are so many different ones and which are relevant to you and your machine. This section includes My Embroidery Format Guide which is a downloadable PDF for your reference.

Section 02

Where To Buy Designs

Duration 11 mins

The second section is all about where to buy designs and includes tips and advice to consider when making purchases of embroidery designs online. Also, we look at some of my favourite websites for buying designs and also additional tips for buying designs on Etsy. 

Section 03

Downloading, Storing & Transferring Designs

Duration 38 mins

In this section we look at what to do with all of those designs you have just purchased!! It's too easy to buy and then forget what you've bought so I take you through the process of downloading the designs from the embroidery website, how best to file them on your computer and then sending them to your embroidery machine.

Section 04

Digitising & Software

Duration 50 mins

The chunkiest section of this module and for good reason! This section will show you the basics of digitising, explaining what digitising is and the difference between auto and manual digitising. We also discuss options if digitising isn't for you because not it's definitely not for everyone, but there are still options.

Section 05

Testing

Duration 14 mins

The final section covers why it's important to test designs (especially newly digitised ones). We discuss which fabric to test designs on, which threads and stabiliser to use too. Also included, is My Stabiliser Checklist from Module 1 to help you with your stabiliser choices.

Section 01

Bringing it all together

Duration 8 mins

In Modules 1 and 2 we’ve learned all about stabilisers, fabrics, thread, needles, hooping, designs - now we need to decide which combination of these are going to be best for each project. Using the included PDF, we can confidently work through each possible variable and make informed decisions on which projects to use.

Section 03

Beginner Techniques

Duration 1 hour 9 mins

During this section we dive into stitching and have a go with six beginner embroidery techniques - Appliqué, Reverse Appliqué, Embroidery On Fleece, Knockdown, Free Standing Lace and In The Hoop. I take you through how to create each technique with videos and written instructions. Included formats are DST, EXP, HUS, JEF, PCS, PES, VIP & XXX.

Embroidery Terminology

In this section I share my very own, online Embroidery Dictionary with you, and show you how to use it. 
The Embroidery Dictionary includes all of the most common words, phrases and acronyms used in modern machine embroidery, along with descriptions. Use this dictionary whenever you need to look up an embroidery term or word.

Troubleshooting

Duration 45 mins

Even the best machines and embroiderers can run into hiccups. If something goes wrong, try not to panic! This section will help you recognise some of the most common problems in digital machine embroidery and guide you toward simple fixes, so you can get back to stitching with confidence.

Basic Maintenance

Duration 25 mins

This final section we go through how to keep your machines in tip top condition with some basic home maintenance. I share my tips and advice for cleaning and oiling, we look at how often machines should be cleaned and oiled, along with videos showing you how to do it so you can be confident next time your machine is due some maintenance.
